Edward J. Mayfield, 82, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2015 with his wife of nearly 63 years, Mary Elaine (Donegan) at his side, surrounded by his adoring family.

Ed was born on June 26, 1932 in Kansas City, KS. Fiercely proud of Wyandotte County and raised on Strawberry Hill, Ed cherished and lived his Catholic faith and with Mary Elaine, instilled the values of education, honesty, leadership, work ethic and service to us all. Ed was an active member at the Cathedral of St. Peter Catholic Church and former member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Putting leadership and service into action, Ed served as Wyandotte County Clerk from 1969 to 1979 and again from 1993 until his retirement in 2000. Additional leadership activities include past president of St. John’s Catholic Club, where he bowled for over 50 years, CFU bowling league secretary/treasurer for decades, CYO and KCK 3&2 coach. Ed and Mary Elaine, both 1950 Bishop Ward High School graduates were inducted into its Hall of Fame in April 2014. In retirement, Ed lived by the motto, ‘take it one day at a time’ and was widely known for his passionate attendance at hundreds of his grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s events.

Role model for all, Ed’s greatest pride and joy in life were his 9 children, 21 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren: Barbara Kling and her children Dennis (Erin) and Ryan (Kate); Susan Clem (Marvin) and their children Amy (Jack) Hartman and Andy (Kelli); Mike; Jane Janes (Dave) and their children Michelle (Will) Whisler and David (Jennifer); John (Joanne) and their children Emily (Adam) Grajkowske, Allison and Steven; Dan (Carolyn) and their children Jake (Jenni) Fuller and Nick Fuller and Katie Mayfield; Tom (Julie) and their children Lindsey and Grant; Margaret (Darin) Looper and their children Megan, Austin and Justin; and Ed (Julie) and their children Blake, Mackenzie, Connor and Madison. Along with the rest of us, great grandchildren Nate, Anastasia, Owen, Brayden, Raegan, Lydia, Brennan, Jackson, Carter, Lincoln and Emma will miss the words of wisdom and advice that Grandpa willingly shared. Ed will be missed as well by cousins and friends too numerous to mention.

Ed’s mother Katherine Turner, mother and father-in-law Margaret and Vincent Donegan, brother-in-law Vincent Donegan, Jr and son-in-law Donald Kling, Jr. preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in Ed's honor to Cathedral of St. Peter Catholic Church, Bishop Ward High School or Sisters, Servants of Mary.

The Mass of Christian burial and celebration of a life richly lived will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Monday, April 20, at Cathedral of St. Peter Catholic Church, KCK. Visitation will also be at the Church from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, April 19 with the rosary at 6:30. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, KCK.
