Duane Edward Howard, 85, died Tuesday, March 24, 2015, in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Born Jan. 9, 1930, in Locke, Cayuga County, New York. He is the son of Russell Sage and Nora (Smith) Howard of Mondovi and Altoona, Wisconsin. He married Elizabeth Pearl Harley on Aug. 26, 1950, in Moravia, New York. Duane was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years; his parents; a brother, Dwight, killed in France during World War II in 1944; and niece, Dr. Carolyn Leech. He is survived by five children, 14 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. His children are Dale Harley Howard and wife Margaret of Woodstock, Maryland, and their children Barry C., Brian, and April; Roger Russell Howard and wife Terri of Baltimore, Maryland, and their children, Austin, Aaron, Bridgette, and Sarah; Robin Rae (Mrs. Peter) Hughes of Chesapeake City, Maryland, and their children Jeremy and Adam; Barry Duane Howard and wife Janet of Glenwood, Maryland, and their children Russell and Bonnie; Julie Elizabeth (Mrs. Matthew) Johnson of Poolesville, Maryland, and their children, Rosemary, Amanda, and Lydia; and Carolyn Leech’s children, Alan, Amy, William, and Julia. Duane served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was past president of the Somerset County Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and a member of the American Legion. Duane was a barbershop singer and a longtime member of the Somerset Roof Garden Chorus. Other passions included genealogy, ballroom dancing, playing bridge, cruising, and world travel. Duane was a man who could strike up conversation with anyone and was well-liked by all he met. Interment of ashes and graveside service will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 2, 2015, in the Kingwood IOOF Cemetery in Kingwood, with a noon gathering at the Oakhurst Tea Room in Somerset. Friends and family are invited to attend both and share their memories of Duane. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Somerset County Literacy Council, Attn: Jenny Jamison, 281 Technology Drive, Somerset, PA 15501.
