Peter Burkhalter was the eldest son of Vaughters and Leucretia Burkhalter. He was married to Sarah Brannen and had two sons- John and Francis. He was mustered into service for the Confederate Army in Company H of the 61st Regiment of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was a Corporal and was killed in the Second Battle of Bull Run (Manasses). His burial may have been at the battle site but most likely he was shipped back home and buried in the Waters cemetery. Many of his family were buried either in the Waters cemetery or Harmony Church cemetery. Peter was married to Sarah Brannen. After he died she later married Samuel Eli Lee but divorced from him. In the 1980'census she is divorced and living with a sister in law. No records after that.
Son John must have died young but son Francis lived for a while in Tattnall County and later moved to Orange County Florida with many of his children.
