Salem Native Dies at 81
Mrs. Stewart Pioneer Daughter
Mrs. Josephine Parrish Stewart, Portland, daughter of a Willamette university founder, died Sunday at a Salem nursing home after a short illness. She was 81.
Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of Rev. Josiah L. Parrish and Dr. Jane L. Parrish. Dr. Parrish came to Oregon with the second Jason Lee expedition and later helped found Willamette university.
Born August 21, 1873, at Salem, Mrs. Stewart received her education in that community and at Mills college, Annie Wright seminary and the Classical School for Girls in New York city.
She was married to Dr. Frank Slater in Binghampton, N. Y., June 3, 1896, but the marriage ended in divorce. She was married to Fred S. Stewart, Salem, February 6, 1911, and the couple made their home there many years. Mr. Stewart died in 1922.
Mrs. Stewart was a long-time member of Salem’s First Congregational church.
Housemother Roles Filled
For three years she was a housemother at Oregon State college, and served in the same capacity 15 years at the University of Oregon. In addition, Mrs. Stewart was hostess at Crater Lake lodge.
She had made her home in Portland the past 12 years.
One son, Richard D. Slater, Salem, survives. Mrs. Stewart also leaves two grandsons and one great-grandson.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Golden mortuary, Salem, with Dr. Julian Keiser officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview cemetery, Portland.
