Joe Neil Hurst, 77, died Friday Feb. 22, 2013 at the Jane Phillips Medical Center, in Bartlesville, Okla.

Cremation has take place and inurnment will be held at a later date at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Humboldt.

Joe was born Oct. 25, 1935 in Petrolia, the son of Millard and Mable McCllean Hurst. He grew up in Humboldt, and attended and graduated in 1954 from the Humboldt school system.

On May 26, 1955 Joe was united in marriage to Joan Wimsett and the couple made their home in Independence. Joan survives, of the home.

Joe served in the United States Army from which he received an honorable discharge in February, 1958, with the rank of sergeant.

Joe worked as a lineman for Kansas Gas and Electric retiring after working 20 plus years for them.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 139 Independence, and the Fortitude Lodge 107 of Elk.

Survivors include his wife, Joan, of the home; one son, Joe Neil Hurst, Jr., of Independence; one daughter, Julie Hodgden of Thayer; three brothers, Richard Hurst of Humboldt, Roy Hurst of Erie, and Larry Hurst of Texas; eight grandchildren, Bobby and Heather Rash, John and Nikki Hodgden, Kay Leigh and Nick Bowers, Jesse Hurst, Johnny Honeycutt, Mike Honeycutt, Patrick Shrum, Trisha Green; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son Johnny Hurst, a daughter Debbie Honeycutt and a great-grandson Ryker Layne Bowers.
