Served on the staff of Maj. Gen. Sterling Price, CSA. Edward attended the United States Military Academy. He was expelled for being part of a group of Cadets that chased a flock of sheep into the Hudson River, drowning them. He then worked as a surveyor in Missouri. Afterward he spent time in Mexico, then returned to St. Louis. He undertook the study of law. In 1833 he married Frances Elisabeth Singleton. He built the first brick house in Hannibal, Missouri. His second wife was Susan Ellen Peake, sister of Cornellia Peake McDonald, wife of Col. Angus William McDonald and brother to Edward Charles. He died of pneumonia contracted while travling to Richmond to attain funds for the war effort in the Mid West. He made it to the family home at Winchester, Va where he passed away two days later with his brother Angus at his side.
