Sarah Mahoney Willis was the third daughter of William Mahoney and Mary Elizabeth Peterson. Within the year of Sarah's birth, her mother's health failed. Sarah went to live with her grandparents, Tobias and Sarah Peterson, on their farm in Cecil county, Maryland. She attended the public schools, and at the age of sixteen years became the wife of Jackson Willis. Her husband purchased a farm adjoining that of her grandfather, Tobias Peterson, where the couple resided with their six children: Clifford, Rexley, Daniel, Sarah Emma, Carl and Lillie.
