Robert Dwight Smalley, 66, of International Falls, MN died Friday morning, April 10, 2015 at the Ranier Roost with his loving wife Dianne by his side.

Robert was born on July 23, 1948 in Uxbridge, Ontario Canada to parents Wilbur and Joan Smalley.

Bob grew up in Marathon, Ontario, on the north shore of Lake Superior.

As a member of the Boy Scouts he developed an avid interest in birding which led to several trips throughout Canada, the United States, Central America, and South America.

Following graduation from grade twelve, Bob moved to Stratford where he completed grade thirteen. He then studied at the University of Guelph.

In 1973 Bob began his career with the Ontario Ministry of Corrections and simultaneously earned a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree with a Legal Studies Option from the University of Waterloo graduating with honors.

While employed by the Ministry from 1973 to 1977 Bob was a correctional officer at the Guelph Jail and the Kitchner Jail. In 1977 he was promoted to Shift Supervisor/Operational Manager and worked at the Wellington Detention Centre, Guelph Correctional Centre, and Guelph Jail. In 1997 to 1998 he was a Young Offender Unit Manager at the Wellington Detention Centre, and then became a Systemic Change Facilitator at the Bell Cairn Staff Development Centre. With a love for outdoor activities, especially fishing and hunting, Bob decided to end his career in Fort Frances. Before retiring he received the Exemplary Service Award.

He also enjoyed dancing and in 2001 he met his dance and hunting partner Dianne. They were married on November 23, 2002 in Ray, MN and made their home in Borderland. He spent about ten years working for the Northland Counseling Center as a Mental Health Practitioner.

Bob was recently preceded in death by his father, Wilbur; uncle, Albert (Jake); and his father-in-law, Einar Sundin.

Bob is survived by his wife Dianne Smalley; daughter, Jana Smalley (Mike Roozenburg); step-sons, Bjorn Johnson, and Leif Johnson; grandchildren, Carter Smalley, Grayson Smalley, and Gabrielle Johnson; siblings, Judy Wesley (John Harmon), Deborah (Tom) McCutcheon, Douglas (Laurie) Smalley, David Smalley (Lynda Shambla), Jan(Frank) Hertwig, Tracey Musset (Allan Rose), Nancy Voros (Paul Farrel), and Jeffrey (Luanne) Smalley; and extended family members of Smalley, Wiles and Sundin descent.

Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.
