Harlan was born September 12, 1933 in Edgewood, Iowa, the son of Edward and Blanche (Maeder) DeSotel. He married Marjorie Johnson on January 19, 1985 in Anamosa, Iowa. Harlan was a driver for H & W Motor Express. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Anamosa, Eagles Club in Dubuque and Local # 421 Union Teamster.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings; Edward, Eldon, Helen, Birdena, Clarence, Edwin and Cora.
