26 year old J. Nicholas Flowers (J. N. Flowers) enlisted in Company D of Manigault's Battalion, South Carolina Volunteers (Infantry, Artillery and Cavalry) on March 22, 1862. Manigault's Battalion was broken up in May 1862 forming Company A 6th Battalion South Carolina Infantry (Byrd’s Battalion) and on September 9, 1862 formed Company C 26th South Carolina Infantry. On November 17, 1864 Nicholas Flowers was listed as killed near Petersburg, Virginia.

His whole name was Joseph Nicholas Flowers, his father was James J. Flowers 1803-1870 and his mother was Elizabeth Rainey, he married Laura Emily Davis in the early 1850s. His one child with Laura was Wellington Lucas Flowers. He joined the Confederate army on March 22, 1862, a soldier in the 26th South Carolina infantry. He was killed in action at the battle of Petersburg, Va. In Nov. 1864. He is buried in a mass grave at Petersburg. His Great grandfather was Rev. Jesse Flowers of Wilcox Co., Alabama.
