Jean is my husbands maternal grandmother.

Emma Jean Harris Painter was actually given the name Gladys Virginia Emma Jean Harris on March 17, 1921. She was the daughter of John Harris and Laura Elizabeth McCaskell. She had three sisters and one brother. One thing that always amazed everone was the fact that all of her sisters had this dark almost black hair, yet she had much lighter hair and a much more fair complexion. She was always close to her family, especially her sisters.

Jean was married a couple of times and from those unions came her two children, Alice and Harris. Jean was a hard working woman who always held down a job to give her children a good life. She worked for a period of time for Frougs Department Store. She was very proud of her children and especially proud of her 4 grandchildren and her great grandchildren. She had a deep faith in our Lord and Savior and was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

She also was very talented. I have a nativity set complete with the stable, trees, 3 wiseman, shephards, Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus that she made with the plastic canvas. One can tell by seeing it that it took a lot of time, effort, and patience to complete. I highly prize it and consider it a very special heirloom. It is my desire that in a hundred years my great grandchildren will enjoy it and know that it was made with love by their great great great grandmother.

Jean passed away unexpectedly on April 2, 2001. She had been in the hospital and was being treated for a fracture and the Friday before her passing they had been talking about releasing her in a couple of days. She is missed and thought of often. She is buried in Oak Cemetery in her hometown, Fort Smith, Arkansas.

The following is her obituary
