Charles L. Walling, 82, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. He was born November 18, 1926 at Oskaloosa, the son of Arthur K. and Lola Mae Long Walling. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School and received a degree in Journalism from the University of Iowa in 1950. He served in the United States Army. After his graduation from Iowa, Chuck returned to Oskaloosa and worked in the family business, the Oskaloosa Daily Herald. The Oskaloosa Daily Herald was owned and operated by 3 generations of the Walling family until it was sold. On February 17, 1973, he was united in marriage to Bernice Gillespie at Oskaloosa. In retirement, Charles sold real estate in Oskaloosa with Townsley Real Estate, and also worked with H. & R. Block Tax Service for many years. Chuck was a member of the First Christian Church, Oskaloosa, and had been active in civic groups including the Elks and American Legion. He loved feeding birds around his yard, and tending his flower gardens.

His family includes his wife Bernice Walling of Oskaloosa; two sons and their wives: Dr. A.K. and Rebecca Walling of Tampa, Florida and Tom and Deborah Walling of Oskaloosa, and a daughter and her husband: Anne and Dr. John Dowdle of St. Paul, Minnesota; two stepsons and their wives: Tom and Marti Gillespie of Oskaloosa and Terry and Rita Gillespie of Thornton, Colorado; nine grandchildren: Laura, Charley, Chris, and Eleanor Walling, Ryan and Conor Dowdle, and Aaron, Anne, and Garret Gillespie; and two great grandchildren: Alexander and Anna Gillespie.

Funeral services for Chuck Walling will be held Monday, March 9, 2009, at 1 p.m. in the First Christian Church, Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Michael Omundson officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Sunday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Sunday from 1 - 2 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice for the new Serenity House or to the First Christian Church, Oskaloosa.
