Dr. Philip Briscoe V, a longtime physician who was known as the "father of pediatrics in Annapolis," died Oct. 27 of cancer at the home of relatives in Wellesley Hills, Mass.
Dr. Briscoe, 79, a Maryland native who moved from Annapolis during the summer, held a private pediatric practice in Annapolis from 1948 until he retired in 1983.
"He just loved the children and they loved him, too," said his wife, the former Mary Louise Asbury, whom he married in 1942. "To him trust was important between the patient, parents and doctor."
In addition to his practice, Dr. Briscoe served as the first chief of pediatric service at Anne Arundel General Hospital from 1948 to 1958, was a two-term president of the Anne Arundel County Medical Society, and was vice president of the Maryland Academy of Pediatrics and the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland.
"He was as patient as he was efficient," said Roland Freedman, a friend and former neighbor. "To do what he did for as long as he did is extraordinary. He was just an extraordinary person."
A native of Calvert County, Dr. Briscoe received his bachelor's degree from the Johns Hopkins University in 1938 and his medical degree from the university's school of medicine in 1942.
After a medical internship in Detroit, he entered the Army Air Forces in 1943 and attained the rank of captain when he was discharged in 1946. He returned to Baltimore to complete his residency at the old Harriet Lane medical facility, the forerunner of the John's Hopkins Children's Center.
Dr. Briscoe for many years operated his practice from a small office on Forbes Street in Annapolis. Patients came from throughout the area to see him, and he made house calls.
"He considered seeing patients at any time just part of the job," said Carole Woodale, whose children were patients for many years.
When he retired, the Anne Arundel County Pediatric Society dubbed him the "father of pediatrics in Annapolis." In his retirement, he taught at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and did clinic work for Anne Arundel Health Department.
Dr. Briscoe was keenly interested in historic preservation and belonged to several preservation organizations, including the society of the Cincinnati of Maryland, the society of the Ark and Dove and Historic Annapolis Inc., of which he was founder.
He was also a member of the Hammond Harwood House Association, the Calvert County Historical Society, the Rotary Club International of Annapolis, the Naval Academy Officer's Golf Association, the Ancient South River Club, the Annapolis Yacht Club and the Southern Maryland Society.
Services are scheduled for 11: 30 a.m. Saturday at All Saints Episcopal Church, in Sunderland in Calvert County.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Navy Capt. Philip Briscoe VI of Virginia Beach, Va.; two daughters, Diane Frost Ausbury Briscoe of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Jeanne Clare Briscoe Baum of Wellesley Hills, Mass.; and five grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
