He was a Civil War veteran, serving in Company K, Texas 4th Calvary Regiment with his brothers William A and Joseph L. A veterans stone was requested, and granted, to Mrs. W.J. Brookshire of Lufkin TX on 6 Sept. 1940. He was quite possibly taken prisoner when his regiment surrendered in LA.
