OBITUARY :
DR. HAROLD H. GIST, 92, died on June 24, 2007, at Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport.

He was born in 1915 in Fristoe, Mo., the son of Colonel and Mrs. E. H. Gist. He was predeceased by two sisters, one of whom survived more than three years in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Manila, Philippines, with the help of brave and friendly Filipinos and the International Red Cross.

He is survived by four children, Cynthia Letitia Gist of Hagerstown, Md., Drucilla Ann Gist of Alexandria, Va., Christopher Howard Gist and his wife, Dawn West Gist, of Maugansville, Md. and Harold Morgan Gist and his wife, Karen Reecher Gist, of Smithsburg.

There are seven grandchildren.

Dr. Gist is also survived by his stepson, David Howard Bell, and his wife, Anne Tulledge Bell, of Troy, N.Y.; their two children; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

His first wife, Jean Stephenson Gist, died in 1977; his second wife, Lois Bell Gist, died in 1992.

He graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1940, where he was a member of the Varsity "V" Club (basketball), the Virginia Athletics Foundation, the Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumni and the Raven Society.

Dr. Gist practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Hagerstown for 26 years, primarily with F.D. Dove Jr., M.D. He was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a member of the Maryland OB/GYN Society.

He was a member and past president of the Washington County Hospital medical staff and the Washington County Medical Society. He was a past chairman of the Washington County Health System Inc. Dr. Gist was a board member of Washington County Hospital Association, Antietam Health Services and the Washington County Hospital Endowment Fund, and an associate member of the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary. He was a member of the Medical and Surgical Faculty of Maryland and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Gist was a member of the Hagerstown Kiwanis, the YMCA Board and the board of United Way. He was a member of League of Women Voters, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts and an associate of the Maryland Symphony.

He was a past president of the Washington County Unit of the American Cancer Society and a board member of the Maryland Division. He was a chairman of the Advisory Board to the Washington County Board of Health.

He was a member of the Washington County Historical Society, the Hagerstown Civil War Round Table, the Civil War Preservation Trust, the National Trust for Historical Preservation, the Mt. Vernon Ladies Association and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

In anticipation of World War II (and a low draft number), Dr. Gist was commissioned a 1st lieutenant, Medical Corps, Army of the United States, and entered on active duty in July 1941. His tours of duty included the Walter Reed Army Hospital; the Station Hospital USMA, West Point, N.Y., where he was an instructor in military hygiene and sanitation and in 1943-1944 was team physician for the Great Army football teams of Davis and Blanchard. His final tour of duty was by way of the Ledo Burma Road to the China-Burma-India Theatre of Operation with the 105th Portable Surgery Hospital. He was separated as a major in April 1946, stayed in the Active Reserve, and was retired in 1975 as colonel and commander, 92nd Field Hospital, U.S. Army Reserve, Baltimore.

He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association, the Military Officers Association of America, the China, Burma, India Veterans Association, VFW Post 1936 and Morris Frock Post 42 of the American Legion.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Leitersburg Cemetery. Military services will be conducted at the graveside by American Legion Post 42.
