YOUTH KILLED In Gun Battle With Officials - Ward Johnson, 19, of Pittsfield, Pa., is dead in a morgue here, and Ralph Rickerson, 24, also of Pittsfield, is in Mercy Hospital with a bullet wound in his leg as the result of a running battle with county and city officers at the Pennsylvania railroad station, about 12 o'clock last night. The men are believed to be the two of the trio which attempted to hold up a Columbus restaurant, earlier in the evening, and escaped from Columbus police by boarding a moving freight train. ~ THE REPUBLICAN ~ MOUNT VERNON - Saturday, 7 April, 1928 - DEAD BANDIT, Another Captured; One Makes Escape - One bandit was shot and killed, another shot throught the right leg and captured, while a third made his escape, following a gun battle with Mt. Vernon officers at 12:30 this morning at the Pennsylvania passenger station, south of the city. The dead bandit was identified by papers on his person as Ward Johnson, aged 19, Pittsfield, Pa. The body is at Miller and O'Bryan's morgue. The captured bandit gave the name of Ralph Rickerson, aged 24, Pittsfield, Pa. He was shot throught the fleshy part of the right leg. He is at Mercy Hospital. His condition is not serious. Officers were unable to obtain the name of the bandit who made his escape. Sheriff C.G. Steam, Deputy Sheriff Hoy C. Lynde, City Patrolmen French, Jessup and Magers and Detective Smith of the Pennsylvania railroad engaged in the gun battle with the bandits. It is undetermined who killed the bandit. According to Columbus police the trio had made an unsuccessful attempt to hold up L.P. Carmoni's restaurant in the north-eastern section of Columbus earlier last night, and when they were driven off ran to the Pennsylvania yards nearby and were seen to board a C.A. and C. train.
