Wayne J. Schmitz, Sr., age 82, of Wabasha, died Friday, April 10, 2015 at Sauer Health Care in Winona. He was born December 4, 1932 in Caledonia, the son of Leo and Erma (Rottman) Schmitz, Sr.. He moved with his parents from Caledonia to the Wabasha/Kellogg area in 1944. Wayne worked on the Henry Barton farm on Sand Prairie, rural Wabasha. He married Margaret Wehrenberg September 14, 1954 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg. After their marriage the couple made their home in Kellogg where Wayne was employed at the Kellogg Creamery. After several years there he went to work for the Froedeart Malt Co. in Winona until he retired. He was an energetic person who didn’t believe in idyll time so he joined his son, Wayne Jr., in his lawn and landscaping business. Wayne and Margaret moved to Wabasha in 1991.
He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg. His family was very important to him and he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Schmitz, Wabasha, MN; children, Patricia Maringer, Lewiston, MN, Daniel Schmitz (Cheryl Edelbach), Kellogg, MN, Donald Schmitz, LaCrosse, WI, Robert “Smokey” Schmitz, Kellogg, MN, Wayne “Toad” (Chris) Schmitz, Jr., Pepin, WI; eleven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brothers, Leroy (Helen) Schmitz, Winona, MN, Leo (Connie) Schmitz, Jr., LeCenter, MN, Lloyd Schmitz, Lake City, MN; sisters, Mary Ann Gray, Blaine, MN, Sharon Newman, Webster, MN; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Erma Schmitz, Sr., son, Michael Schmitz, great-grandson, Nathan Sholing, nephew, Gregory Schmitz, brothers, Quentin, Gerald and Larry Schmitz and sister, Rosemary Arner.

A funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 10:00am at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg with the Reverend Monsignors Thomas Cook and Donald Schmitz officiating. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Zach Schmitz, Bobby and Mike Maringer, Allen Schmitz, Tom Barton and Joe Schmitz. Family and friends may call at the Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 from 5-7pm and at the church on Wednesday one hour before the Mass.
