Judith Anne Powell (Nealing), age 72, beloved wife and mother went home to be with her Lord on March 31, 2015. Born Jan. 8, 1943 in Erie, PA, Judy graduated from Ocala High School in 1960 where she was a cheerleader, named Miss Personality and Miss Ocala High. She graduated from FSU in 1964 where she had been a member of the FSU Flying Circus. She taught high school English in Ocala before moving to Hawai'i in 1966 where she met her husband Jim Powell while surfing. She taught in Hawai.i until 1978, then the couple moved to Oklahoma for five years, then to Crystal River, FL and eventually to Daytona Beach.
Judy left her mark on Citrus County education and was 2008 Citrus County School District Teacher of the Year. As an English teacher and the former director of the Health Academy at Crystal River High School, she was the teacher students wanted to hang out with and the one her fellow teachers wanted to emulate.
Then on Feb. 15, 2008 she was in a car accident which left her paralyzed from the neck down. Judy lost her ability to care for herself, but she never lost the ability to inspire and have a caring heart for others.
Judy's legacy lives on as many of her students were given the opportunity to make something of their lives. Countless parents at the end of every school year came to Judy in tears thanking her for changing their child's life. She was a Gift.
Judy is survived by her husband of 46 years Jim Powell, her daughter Raven Kastis, son James Powell Jr., three stepchildren Jamie, Mike, Devlin, two grandchildren, two step grandchildren, one great grandchild, three step great grandchildren, and two brothers Michale Nealing and Peter Nealing.
In lieu of flowers: 'Orphan's Promise' 700 Club. A memorial service will be held Sat., April 11th 10:00 AM at Salty Church, 221 Vining Ct., Ormond Beach.
