Reverend George W. Carr, I, 94, of Dry Prong, passed from this life on Friday, November 5, 2021, at his residence in Ball.

Reverend George W. Carr was born in La Porte County in Northern Indiana on December 31, 1926. When he was 10 years old, his family moved to southern Alabama where his mother's parents were living. Around that time his parents made their commitment to the Lord and faithfully followed Him and this had a great influence on all six Carr children. Brother Carr had 2 brothers and 3 sisters. In December 1945, Bro. Carr committed his life completely to Christ and months after that he felt very strongly that the Lord wanted him to preach the Gospel. He didn't feel like he could do that; he was just a farm boy after all. Finally, he submitted to God's call and told God that He would have to help him or he couldn't do it.

To prepare for God's Calling, Bro. Carr traveled to North Carolina to attend the Pilgrim Bible College in Kernersville. This College was just getting started and it seemed like a family where everyone knew each other which was a real blessing to Bro. Carr. Dr. Surbrook, the College president and a former general superintendent, took an interest in George. George served as the Assistant Dean of the Dorm, where he had the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Surbrook on issues of discipline. In his second year of bible school his brother Richard joined him at the Pilgrim College to prepare for ministry which was another blessing. Rev. Carr completed two years of bible school and received a ministers' license. After the experience of holding several revivals as a young man, Bro. Carr went to Kingsville, LA, where the district superintendent of the Pilgrim Holiness Church asked him to open a mission. Kingsville was part of a home missions district and Bro. Carr, and others, took a shed and remodeled it to make a small chapel. Beside pastoring this mission church, Bro. Carr helped build parsonages and church buildings for new church starts. This was the beginning of valuable training and experience which would later help him lead several church construction projects. After serving in that capacity for several months, the district officials asked Brother Carr to pastor the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Pineville, LA. While there, he continued his pastoral studies through the district by correspondence. Rev. Carr was ordained in 1949 by Rev. Richard Hawkins, General Secretary for Home Missions. In Pineville, George met and married Grace Lasyone who was going through nurses training and attending classes at Louisiana College. Sheila, their first child, was born in 1950 during this time in Alexandria, LA.

After Pineville, Rev. Carr took a church in Baton Rouge. Both George Jr. (1953) and Phillip (1955) were born there. He pastored in Baton Rouge 3 years. Then, he was called to pastor a church in Birmingham, AL. Later, in 1958, he was asked to pastor in Jonesboro, Arkansas, where he moved with his family. In 1963, Rev. Carr was called to pastor a church in Fairfield (Hamilton), Ohio. Initially, he planned to turn down the request to go to Ohio. He wrote a letter declining to come but he wasn't completely sure if this was the right decision, so he didn't send it. Later, he felt that it would be the Lord's will and he wrote a letter accepting the call. As a hands-on, involved, can-do pastor, Rev. Carr did a little bit of everything at Fairfield. At one period, he was the pastor, the general contractor for a new church building, the church custodian, and responsible for mowing an acre and a half of church and parsonage yard, besides coaching the church softball team. He was well loved and appreciated, and the church progressed well. In 1975, he entered full-time evangelistic work and for 15 years he traveled in twenty or more different states holding evangelistic meetings. Due to his ability to work well with people and effective ministry, he had one of the busiest revival schedules for the denomination and many times, churches asked him to return. Next, he pastored Elmwood Wesleyan Church in Cincinnati, Ohio followed by the Simms Community Wesleyan Church in Pollock, Louisiana. While at Simms Church, the District Superintendent, Dr. Jimmy Johnson, gave Rev. Carr the eagle award for his extra effort in visitation and calling on people in the hospital and nursing homes. It was at Simms Church that Rev. Carr passed the milestone of 50 years in ministry. He submitted his letter of resignation to the church board at the 50-year mark, but knowing that he had construction experience, the church board asked him to stay for one more year to help the church build a family life center. He agreed to stay and worked very hard to see the family life center built and raise funds to pay for it. It was built and paid for by the end of that next year. To God be the glory! After 51 years of service with the Wesleyan Church, he retired in 1998.

Though "retired," he was not ready to stop his ministry. He began pastoring a Free-Methodist Church in Provencal, Louisiana and drove over an hour each way to lead the church. After two years, he was asked to be the pastor for a new church start, Fellowship Chapel. Before leaving the Provencal church, he arranged for another pastor to "interview" and this minister replaced him at Provencal. At Fellowship Chapel it seemed as if Rev. Carr had come full circle. Some of the parishioners from the church in Pineville, LA from early in his ministry began to attend Fellowship Chapel. J.L. Waites and others that he had known from his early days of ministry began to attend.

On April 22, 2009, his wife of nearly 60 years, Gracie L. Carr died. On February 13, 2011, Rev. Carr married Ms. Margie Lavespere. While pastoring Fellowship Chapel in Ball, LA, Rev. George Carr completed 65 years of faithful, loving ministry and the church hosted a celebration for him for 65 years in ministry on June 10, 2012. The plan was for him to step down, but the church subsequently asked him to serve for another two years.

Rev. Carr's ministry started with the Pilgrim Holiness Church and after it merged with the Wesleyan Methodist Church, he continued his service with what became the Wesleyan Church. Skilled in construction and carpentry, Rev. Carr also served as a general contractor at building projects for four of the churches he pastored. Rev. Carr was thankful for the privilege of serving God and many wonderful people over those 67 years. He passed from mortality to eternal life on November 5th at 7:27 AM, leaving Margie, his wife of nearly 11 years. He left footprints of positive and godly influence and will be deeply missed. We thank God for a life well lived and a positive example!

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gracie L. Carr; parents, George Henry and Mary Esther Norris Carr; brothers, Richard N. Carr and Paul Carr and sisters, Elizabeth Jane Spriggs, Rachal Blackmon and Arlene Seegars.

He is survived by his wife, Margie Selby Carr; sons, Phillip M. Carr and wife, Monica; George W. Carr, II and wife, Melody; daughter, Sheila Webb and husband, Gary; step sons, James Lavespere and wife, Sharon; Walt Lavespere and wife, Jenee'; step daughters, Charlotte Dunn and husband, Kevin; Angie Sikes; 20 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and a host of other family members and friends.
