Enlisted, May 8, 1916, in Troop A, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, at the Bedford Avenue Armory, Brooklyn, NY. Served with Troop A, 1st NY Cavalry on the Mexican Border, 1916 - 1917.

Promoted to Color Sergeant, July 24, 1917. Transferred, Oct. 1917, to Headquarters & MP Trains, 27th Division.
Commissioned, Dec. 31, 1917, to 2nd Lieutenant, QM, assigned to 102rn Supply Trains, 27th Division. Transferred to the 102nd Ammunition Trains, 27th Division, and saw combat in both Belgium & France. Returned to the States, March 11, 1919, docking at Hoboken, NJ.
He marched in the " Welcome Home Parade for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City, March 25, 1919. Discharged from service, April 3, 1919, Camp Upton, NY.
