"Co. L 1st Reg't VT H.A."

Was actually a member of the 11th Vermont Regiment Co. L

Some confusion may exist because the 11vt Vermont Volunteer Regiment was also known as the "First Artillery, Eleventh Vermont Volunteers", "1st VT. H.A", "11th VT HA" (Heavy Artillery). The 11th VT Reg. was originally recruited as an Infantry Regiment and assigned to duty in the Northern Defenses of Washington, DC. The Regiment was changed to Heavy Artillery by order of the War Department. It was the largest Regiment from Vermont and after re-assignment to the Heavy Artillery; the 12 Companies were thus referred to as Batteries. (i.e. Battery A, B, C, etc.)

After the Battle of the Wilderness, General Grant ordered it to the front where the regiment once again became Infantry, while still wearing their Artillery Uniforms, which were obvious even from a distance due to the Red Trimmings on their pants and jackets. The red trimmings were indicative of a Artillery Regiment. Arriving at Spotsylvania Court house it joined the "Old Vermont Brigade" becoming part of the Sixth Corps. It fought in all sixth Corps battles from the time of Spotsylvania Courthouse to Appomattox Court House.
