Dr. Ernest S. Barratt, Ph.D.

GALVESTON — Dr. Ernest S. Barratt, Ph.D., passed away Monday morning, August 29, 2005, at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. “Ernie” was born on March 31, 1925, in North Charleroi, Pennsylvania. Upon graduating high school with honors in 1943, he entered the U.S. Naval Officers’ Training Program and attended Texas Christian University, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 1947, and Master’s Degree in 1949. He then went on to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Texas in Psychology in 1951.

He served as Director of Clinical Psychology at the University of Delaware from 1951 to 1957. He did Post Graduate work at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Clinical Electroencephalography. From 1957 to 1962 he was Professor and Director of Laboratories in the Department of Psychology at TCU. He did a Fellowship at the Brain Research Institute at UCLA with Donald Lindsley from 1961 to 1962. In September, 1962, he came to UTMB as Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry and a member of the Neuroscience Graduate Program. In 1965, he was appointed Professor, and, in 1982, was appointed Chief of the Psychodiagnostic Service and Cognitive Neuroscience Lab. From 1964 to 1985, he served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston in the Department of Psychology; and served as a Visiting Lecturer at Rice University from 1964 to 1969.

Dr. Barratt had many responsibilities at UTMB, as well as nationally and in the community. He served as President of the UTMB Community Involvement Committee and was elected Fellow of many national learned societies, including American Psychological Association, American Psychological Society, Society for Personality Assessment, American EEG Society, International Organization of Psychophysiology, and the American Psychopathological Association. He was elected as one of 100 Life Members of the Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology. Ernie was honored by his colleagues as Senior Faculty Marshal for the 1995 UTMB Medical School Commencement. In 1998, he was appointed the Marie B. Gale Centennial Professor of Psychiatry. In 2005, he was elected as the first President of the International Society of Research on Impulsivity.

Dr. Barratt was a world renown Psychologist and Neuroscientist. He made over 229 presentations at state, national and international meetings. He was author or co-author of 151 articles and chapters. He served as advisor and mentor to numerous fellows and faculty who joined him in his Cognitive Neuroscience Lab from Texas and around the world, including Spain, Korea, China, Germany, and The Netherlands.

Ernie was also an active member of the Galveston Community serving as an elected Trustee of the GISD School Board from 1971 until 1989. He served as a member on the Galveston County Drug Advisory and Coordinating Committee, 1971-1972. He served as a Member of the Board of Directors for the American National Investments Accounts, Inc. from 1990 until his death.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Karen; a son, Christopher Barratt, and a daughter, Robin Barratt; a daughter-in-law, Holly Barratt; and the loves of his life, granddaughter, Taylor Barratt and grandson, Cole Barratt. He is also survived by nieces, Fern Love and Joyce Williams.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, September 2, 2005, at Levin Hall North, at the intersection of 10th and Market Street on the UTMB Campus in Galveston.
