Aged 20
Son of James Daniel and Margaret Ellen Gallagher, of Nathalia, Victoria, Australia.

Probably a Wireless Operator / Air Gunner.




He was a member of the crew of a Handley Page HP57 Halifax V Bomber, EB 134, that crashed during a night training exercise at Lavally, near Tuam, Co. Galway. They were part of 1663 Heavy Conversion Unit of 7 Group Training Command, based at RAF Rufforth in North Yorkshire from where it had taken off, but was instructed to land elsewhere, when it lost its way. The entire crew were killed in the crash. In accordance with usual practice, the Irish authorities handed over the bodies of the victims to the British Military authorities on the border with Northern Ireland at Belleek, rendering full military honours.
The bodies of Gallagher, Gardner, Johnston and Sansome were buried at Irvinestown, Co. Fermanagh.
The bodies of the others were returned to their families Britain for burial.
