MACON - Captain (Retired) Samuel Head, 81, of 820 Forest Lake Drive, South died Monday. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday at Forest Hills United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Macon Memorial Park. Rev. Jim Smith and Rev. Frank Harris will officiate. The family will greet friends from 6 until 8 PM Wednesday at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street and ask that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Forest Hills United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 1217 Forest Hill Road, Macon 31210.
Capt. Head was born in Marion, North Carolina and had lived in Macon since 1960. He was retired from the United States Marine Corps, serving on active duty from September 2, 1939 until August 31, 1960. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained on Iwo Jima and served during the Korean Conflict. Capt. Head was a member of the Middle Georgia Marine Corps League Detachment #970. Capt. Head was employed at Washburn Moving and Storage, having worked there since 1960. He was a member of Forest Hills United Methodist Church was an honorary member of Riverside Golf and Country Club, was a Mason and a Shriner. Capt. Head was the son of the late Floyd and Herma Thomas Head.
Capt. Head is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Head of Macon; daughters, Melinda Mansker of Macon and Sammy Diggins of Macon; grandchildren, Patrick Diggins, Rebecca Mansker Mason and Kirk Mansker; 3 great-grandchildren.
