According to "The First Hundred Years"; the centennial publication of Belton, Missouri; Andrew Carson Hawthorne joined the Confederate Army at the age of 19 (1862). That is confirmed by records indicating that Andrew enlisted in Company A, North Carolina 26th Infantry Regiment on 27 Mar 1862 in Ashe County, North Carolina. Wounded at Gettysburg, Andrew subsequently recovered and rejoined his company. Andrew was captured at The Wilderness, however, and was still a prisoner at Elmira when the war ended. Through a family connection to President Andrew Jackson, Andrew was paroled and in 1866 headed west to Cass County, Missouri. Nearly ten years later, on October 6, 1875, Andrew married Jane Ross, daughter of Captain John Ross. Although he apparently began his time in Cass County as a farmer, Andrew later became a merchant. The store thrived and was later managed by his son Edwin E. Hawthorne.
