Hazleton Plain Speaker; Saturday, April 28, 1888:
Another name has been added to the list of fatalities that frequently occur by men who are engaged in mining coal. This time it is John Airey, of Humboldt, a man who is widely known in the Lower Luzerne region. Mr. Airey was employed by Linderman, Skeer & Co., at their colliery, at Humboldt. About half-past three o'clock yesterday afternoon Mr. Airey was engaged with Thomas Morgan, of this place, in driving a breast and putting in a road when suddenly there was a fall of rock and Mr. Airey's body was mashed so badly as to be almost unrecognizable. Death was instantaneous. His remains were removed to his home at that place. Morgan was also hurt but his injuries are not of a very serious nature. He was brought to his home and medical aid summoned.
