JOHN MORORIS O"BRYAN of Houston, TX, passed away peacefully in his home on April 4, 2015. He was 91. John is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Martha Stein O’Bryan, his mother Emma Barr O’Bryan, father John William O’Bryan, and sisters Naomi Jackson and Bonnie Renaker. He is survived by his sister Irma Jackson, brother William O’Bryan, five children; John Jr. (Irene) of Los Angeles, CA, Richard (Carol) of New Albany, IN, Mary Ann, Kenneth (Kathy), and Rebecca Prejean (James) all of Houston, TX; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was born in Meade County, Kentucky on December 30, 1923 and grew up in New Albany, Indiana where he lived until relocating to Houston in 1980. He graduated from New Albany high school in 1941 and from the University of Louisville in 1950 with a degree in Accounting. From January 1943 to March 1946, John served in the United States Army where his tour of duty included the European Theater of Operations. He was employed by The Lafitte Company in Louisville, KY from 1956 to 1977 where he served as director, vice president and treasurer. From 1980 until 1990, John was employed by the Internal Revenue Service in Houston, TX, where he served as team coordinator in Houston’s Large Case Division. An active member in his community, John served on the Floyd County, IN Tax Adjustment Board, served as director and treasurer of the Valley View Golf Club, served on the New Albany District Board of Education, and the Board of Education of Holy Family Church. He was also a member of the Cardinal Ritter Council of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany, IN and St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church in Houston, TX. In retirement he enjoyed playing golf, attending his grandchildren’s many school and sporting events, playing cards, visiting family from coast to coast and cheering on his Rockets, Texans, Astros, Cardinals, Longhorns and Aggies.
Dearly loved by family and friends, John was a leader by example who served as a moral compass for his family. He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather; his family his greatest source of joy and pride. Though he has gone to be with Martha in the house of the Lord, he will remain forever in our hearts.
Memorial contributions in John’s honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The visitation will be held at Niday-Fairmont Funeral Home in Pasadena, Texas on Friday, April 10, 2015 from 6pm-8pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Houston, Texas on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 11:00am with the burial immediately following and being held at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Dickinson, Texas.
