Barbara Sweeney, 100, a former Capitol Hill staffer and teacher, died May 3 in Rockville of anemia and hypertensive cardiovascular disease.
She died at the home of her daughter, who confirmed the death.
From 1929 until 1955, Mrs. Sweeney worked for her father, Rep. Robert Crosser, a Democrat from Cleveland. She made speeches for him, wrote articles for Cleveland newspapers about congressional matters and ran his campaigns, according to her daughter.
After her father lost a reelection bid in 1954, she served on the staffs of the House Un-American Activities Committee and the House Judiciary Committee until retiring from Capitol Hill in 1976.
Later, Mrs. Sweeney was an administrative assistant to the chief of the American Dental Association and in the national headquarters of the United Methodist Church. She tutored embassy children in English and taught Spanish at St. Andrew's Episcopal School, which was then in Bethesda, and worked for 10 years in the office of Washington Episcopal School in Bethesda, which she helped found in 1986.
Barbara Crosser was born in Cleveland and attended George Washington University in the 1930s. She went back to college after retiring from the House staff and received a degree at the University of Maryland in 1979.
Her marriage, in 1940, to Charles A. Sweeney ended in divorce. She raised his two daughters from his earlier marriage to Barbara's older sister, Justine, who died in the late 1930s. In 2005, Barbara Sweeney legally adopted the children.
Survivors include her two daughters; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
