He was born Sept. 29, 1924 in Saybrook to Harry and Elsie Kingsley Campbell. In 1954, John married Betty Crawford; she is now deceased. They had three children. He married the love of his life, Dolores Chavez Williams on Oct. 26, 1963 in Lexington. She survives.
He is also survived by his daughter (with first wife, the late Vonnie Embry), Cheryl (Larry) Mays; son, Darrell (Cindy) Williams; daughter, Velda Williams (James) Brown; daughter, Etta Campbell (Percy) Buckley; son, Michael (Becky) Williams; daughter, Mary Williams (Timothy) Trunnell; son, Frank (Margaret) Campbell; daughter, Tina Williams (Jeromy) Bush; and daughter, Dolly John Campbell (Owen) Wilmoth; a sister, Amanda Bays; a brother, Bill Campbell; 29 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents; son, Earl John Campbell Jr.; grandson, Earl John Campbell III; sisters, Gwendolyn Knackstead and Jean Embry and brothers, Leslie and Jimmy Campbell.
Earl was a World War II Purple Heart recipient, having served in the South Pacific fleet as a private first class in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1945. He was a proud Marine and loved his country. He retired from his career at Illinois Power Co. in 1986 after 31 years of dedicated service.
