He was a tail gunner on “Blondies Follies” at the time he was reported Missing in Action. He and his crew were returning to England after a bombing mission to Germany. Their plane had received heavy damage during the mission and went down in the English Channel.3 crew members were rescued, but only 2 survived.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
