SHUARD BARTLEMA
Shuard Bartlema oldest child of Cornelius and Florence Bartlema was born in the Netherlands April 20, 1867 and passed away June 30, 1956 at the home of his son Louis at Leighton after a short illness of a few days at the age of 89 years, 2 months, and 10 days.
Mr. Bartlema came to Pella at the age of 1 1/2 years and grew to manhood in the Pella vicinity. Later in life he purchased a farm near Olivet, where he spent his entire life.
On March 28, 1895 he was united in marriage to Helena Van Zee and to this union were born two children, namely Mrs. Edna (J. V. Hays) of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Louis of Leighton.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Helena, one grandchild, Harold, two sisters and three brothers. Surviving are his two children, one brother living in California, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
At an early age Mr. Bartlema professed his faith in the Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 3, 1956, 2 o'clock p.on. at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home, Pella, Iowa, the Rev. Willis Grant officiating. Interment was made in the Porterville cemetery. Casket Bearers serving were, Gerrit De Hamer, Amon Long, Reuben De Geest, Jess Billings, Frank Peters, and Ival Harkness. Memorial selections were rendered by Mrs. John Peters, accompanied by Mrs. Everett Vandenberg.
