Don was the son of Charles Howard and Adell Smith Peterson Don was a lifelong resident of Loving. He moved there at the age of seven and it was his home for the next 69 years. He attended Loving School until the sixth grade. Don graduated from Graham High School in 1958. On April 11, 1963, he married Bobbie Jo Andrews, the love of his life. For the next 52 years, the two of them continued to live in Loving where they raised their two daughters and operated their businesses.

Don was an active member of the Loving Community. He devoted much of his time and resources to the town he dearly loved. During his 69 years there he was active in the Loving Community Center, Loving Cemetery Association, Loving Homecoming Association, Loving Fire Department and Loving Shooting Club. Don worked hard to provide for his family, better his community and make a difference in the lives of those around him.
