Casualty of the Great War, James was one of four brothers who served; only one, Sir Thomas "Tommie" Andrews Bradford, D.S.O. [1886-1966]survived. All four were born at Carwood House, Witton Park, County Durham
The other two were both awarded the Victoria Cross, the only pair of brothers to achieve this distinction in WWI.

Lieutenant Commander George Nicholson Bradford

Brigadier General Roland Boys Bradford, V.C., M.C., the youngest General of WWI.

James was a 2nd Lieutenant with "C" Coy. 18th Bn. Durham Light Infantry. Awarded the Military Cross. "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He gallantly led his men into the enemy's trench, capturing many prisoners and two machine guns. He himself killed three of the enemy. Later he succeeded in repelling a determined enemy counter attack". Hebuterne Sector, 3rd March,1917.He died of wounds age 27, leaving a widow, Annie Bradford.
Probate was granted in Durham 5th December 1917 to Thomas Andrews Bradford [his brother]-Colliery Proprietor and Gervase Edward Markham, Mining Engineer-effects £9,663:16s:7d.

They were sons of Amy Marian (nee Andrews) Bradford of "Milbanke", Ravenlea Rd, Folkestone and late George Bradford.
