MISSING AIR CREW REPORT
POINT OF DEPARTURE: El Fasher, Sudan
INTENDED DESTINATION: Maiduguri, Nigeria
554th AAF Base Unit, 4th Ferrying Group, Memphis, Tennessee
Latest information states that C-46 #42-3642 was destroyed and burned. Indications are structural failure and loss of one wing in flight. Crew and passengers are now declared all fatal. Location of wreckage is 12 degrees 40 minutes North, 17 degrees 17 minutes East.
C-46 #42-3642 was forced down after being reported missing. 25 passengers on board. Aircraft departed El Fasher for Maiduguri at 0646Z. Flying at 8000 feet. At 0919 received a routine position report. Genina received a distress call of "Mayday" from 3642 at 0940. Nothing further was heard.
A gasoline leak in the left nacelle caused a fire during which time the radio operator issued a "Mayday." Some time later, the fire caused an explosion which severed the left wing and engine from the fuselage. The airplane fell in two separate parts and burned after hitting the ground.
Cause was accidental. All aboard were fatal. Bodies arrived at Base 31 Dec 44.
Status of Abrahams, Harold L., Pfc: Soldier was passenger aboard C-46 aircraft. Fatal. Full military honors observed at burial.
