Born in the town of Warren, Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg, Germany. At an early age sent to Hamburg to learn mercantile business. Started work at large wholesale and shipping house. Rapid advances, promoted to supercargo of trading vessel of the firm. Held position for several years making voyages to the Mediterranean, Cape of Good Hope, and South America. In 1835 shipwrecked off coast of Louisiana; finally made it to the Unhappy Islands. Then made way to Pennsylvania; decided to settle in this country. Made two trips from Pittsburg to New Orleans, then engaged in the railroad business in Pennsylvania, working under Thad Stevens, constructing the Harrisburg & Gettysburg railway.

1857 - moved to Alexander; laid out town of Alexander.
Also in 1857, promoted to general stock agent with the Great Western Railroad (Wabash).
1853 - moved to farm 3 miles north of Franklin.
1850 - connected with Great Western Railroad (Wabash).
1840 - settled in Franklin, Illinois. Opened store with Harry Reinbach.

6/1/2020 Per P Meado (47252942): Suggested edit: Founded the Village of Alexander, naming it after his friend, John T. Alexander.

Survived by wife & 6 children: Mary, wife of Fred George, of Laramie, Wyoming; William H. Hinrichsen of Jacksonville; Savillah Hinrichsen, at home; Edward S. Hinrichsen, in the railroad mail service; Eugenia, wife of Prof. H. W. Johnston of Jacksonville; and Mark Hinrichsen, at home.
