Joe Coburn was a wrestler of legendary qualities in Weston and Cedarville in the 1880s. He was elected assessor Oneida county in 1892 and served as county sheriff 1894-1898.

A west side antiquarian has recalled: "Sheriff Coburn was such an ardent Republican-and so bald-that Westonians called him 'Bally Lincoln'. After he retired as sheriff he was instrumental in establishing Lincoln School District on which he served as trustee for years. Naturally he named it. Later Lincoln merged with Roosevelt to form Linrose, a combination of the names. Coburn was not a Mormon. His wife was originally the fifth wife of somebody else but she got tired of that role and married Joe.
