Sister Bernadine Manthey, age 101, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, died Wednesday evening, February 11, 2015 at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc.The former Bernardine Manthey was born on May 20, 1913 in Antigo, daughter of the late George and Mary (Cherf) Manthey. She entered the Convent in 1927 and professed her vows in 1931. Sister Bernadine Manthey earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Norbert College, DePere and a Masters of Arts Degree from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana. Sister Bernadine served as a teacher and/or principal at Holy Rosary, Kewaunee, St. Augustine, Chilton, St. Patrick, Askeaton, St. Rose, Clintonville, Holy Innocents and St. Andrew, Manitowoc, St. Mary, Clarks Mills, St. Edward, Mackville, SS Peter & Paul, Ashton, St. Mary, Greenleaf, St. John, Seymour, St. Thomas Moore, Appleton, Corpus Christi, Sturgeon Bay, St. Peter Middleton, all of Wisconsin; St. Willibrord, Chicago, Illinois; SS Peter & Paul, Wellston, St. Nicholas, Zanesville, Ohio. She also served as the coordinator of the learning center at St. Joseph, Waukesha, Wisconsin and as a tutor at Central Catholic, West Point, Nebraska. She retired to St. Francis Convent, Manitowoc in 1988. Since 2008, she had been a resident of St. Rita Health Center at the Motherhouse. She is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; and a sister-in-law: Joyce Manthey, Portland, Oregon. Nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents: George and Mary (Cherf) Manthey; a sister: Sister Rosaria Manthey, OSF; and three brothers and two sisters-in-law: John and Martine Manthey, Richard Manthey and Robert and Marquerite Manthey.Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Finian Zaucha, OFM with burial at Holy Family Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc.The family will greet relatives and friends from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday (TODAY), February 13, 2015 at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. The visitation will continue on Saturday morning, February 14, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc.The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
