Derek Kyle Wisner, 29, of Lubbock, Texas, formerly of Rohrersville, Md., passed away Sunday, March 29, 2015.

He was a 2004 graduate of Boonsboro High School, where he was a distinguished honor student and a member of the National Spanish Honor Society. He was also a tri-sport athlete, participating in football, baseball, and track.

He played for the Boonsboro Warriors, South Mountain Little League, and South County Senior League.

Derek served in the U.S. Army from 2007 until 2012, achieving the rank of sergeant. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for his outstanding performance as a Military Intelligence Human Interrogator with the 502nd Military Intelligence Battalion in Fort Lewis, Wash. After his Basic and Advanced Individual Training, Derek was selected to participate in an accelerated Arabic language course where he became fluent in reading, writing and speaking the Arabic language. As part of this training, he traveled to Egypt to refine his cultural understanding and language expertise. He was well respected by his fellow soldiers.

Derek was a Junior at Texas Tech University, where he was successfully studying International Business. He was instrumental in assisting students with their Arabic language course.

Derek is survived by his very proud parents, Dennis Wisner of Hagerstown and Deena Wisner of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Dan Wisner of San Antonio and Dean Wisner of Clarksville, Tenn.; sister, Darby Wisner of San Antonio; his grandmother, Evelyn L. Himes of Knoxville, Md.; and his aunts and uncles, Marty Himes and Earlene Himes of Knoxville, Samuel Jr. and Kimberly Himes of Martinsburg, W.Va., Betty Breeden of Frederick, Md., Vickie and Roger Battle of Tampa, Fla., and Charles Wisner and Nancy Wisner of Myersville, Md.

Derek was preceded in death by his grandfather, Samuel Himes Sr. of Knoxville; grandparents, Charles and Ellen Wisner of Frederick; his uncle, Larry Wisner of Frederick; and aunt, Michelle Wisner of Frederick.

Derek was a decorated war veteran and a beloved friend and family member.

A memorial service will be held at Old South Mountain Inn, 6132 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, MD 21713, on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m. Friends and family are encouraged to attend to celebrate the life of Derek Kyle Wisner.
