He served his country honorably as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corp where he was an Airplane Electrical Mechanic. He also played the clarinet in a Jazz band called the Sultans of Swing while in the service. Affectionately known as Smiley or Mort, he followed in his fathers footsteps and was the owner and mechanic at the former Smileys Garage in East Greenville for 50 years before retiring and closing the business in 1996.
He was a faithful member of St. Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pennsburg. Smiley was an avid outdoorsman and loved deep sea fishing, hunting, and he was an expert skier. He also played the clarinet in several local town bands.
Survivors: Surviving with his wife; is a daughter, Bonadeen, wife of Douglas Thompson of Virginia; a son, Robert and his wife, Tina, of Red Hill; a stepdaughter, Charmaine, wife of James Krauss, of Zionsville; grandchildren, Grant, Kelly, Michael, Scott, and Jeffrey; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Tesa, Ben, Sam, and Kinsey; and a sister, Violet Bartholomew, of East Greenville.
Services: Will be held privately. His arrangements have been entrusted to Falk Funeral Homes & Crematory, Pennsburg.
