George Eugene “Gene” Rainey, 76, of Newnan went to be with the Lord Monday, April 27, 2009 at Columbus Hospice in Columbus, GA. He was born March 22, 1933 in Coweta County to the late Clen L. & Alice Garrett Rainey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Sarah Pauline Hinesley Rainey; brother, James Rainey, Wilbur Rainey, Harry Donald Rainey, Robert Rainey; and step-mother, Mary Lou Rainey.

He was a loving husband for 55 years continuing to care for her daily the last year and a half of her life when she was confined to the nursing home. Gene was a longtime member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church and recently joined Sargent Baptist Church and was a Free & Accepted Mason at Sylvan Lodge in Sargent. He was a retired Master Sergeant in the Georgia National Guard and retired from selling life insurance with Liberty National. Mr. Rainey was a kind, gentle spirit whose strong faith in God has been an inspiration not only to his children and grandchildren but also to everyone he met.

The funeral is Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 5:00 pm in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Rev. Stacy Stafford and Rev. Floyd Tenney officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The visitation is Wednesday evening between 6:00 & 8:00 pm at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St, Newnan, GA. He is survived by his children, Don Rainey & his wife Sybil of Newnan, Harriett Ward & her husband Slade of Panama City Beach, FL; brother, Mrs. & Mrs. Luther (Amanda) Rainey; sisters, Mr. & Mrs. Wilmer (Louise) Smith, Mr. & Mrs. Stanley (Linda) Yarbrough; sister-in-law, Sara Ann Rainey; grandchildren, Brad Rainey, Karen (Paul) Bass, Heather Rainey & fiancée Adam Carroll, Jennifer Rainey all of Newnan, Chase & Cody Penny, Chris Ward, Roxanne Ward & Robin Cooper all of Panama City Beach, FL; along with cousins, nieces, and nephews.
