Monty was a nineteen year old private and cavalryman in Beale's Brigade, Co. I, 10th Virginia Cavalry at the time of his death in battle (almost 150 years ago to the date of this post). Records are confused as to death at Dinwiddie Courthouse or Sailor's Creek (now a state park) battles in the Appomattox Campaign of Spring 1865. Date of Death 3/31/1865-4/9/1865, though a family notation says it was a skirmish at Sailor's Creek after the surrender had occurred on April 9, 1865. I am not clear if interments occurred outside the iron gate of this cemetery and if so it may be overgrown.(Apparently the graveyard is now on privately owned, posted land) If possible it is likely he is in an unmarked grave (as family tended to do at his Montezuma Farm, Schermerhorn family cemetery on Mechanicsville Turnpike/US 360 several miles east of Richmond in Henrico Co. once owned by John Poole Schermerhorn, Sr.) http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2414903&CScn=Montezuma&

At this point I am considering this a Memorial contribution to this particular cemetery even though the place of his burial was specifically listed (by my family records) as that of the family plot in Amelia Co. of the father of Landon C. Tucker who happens to be the Owen H. Tucker buried in this cemetery. If this burial record and family record is the case, he probably was KIA (or died of mortal wounds incurred at Dinwiddie C.H.) at Sailor's Creek or Appomattox C.H. area further afield than Dinwiddie C.H. And, if so, files on record in the Regimental History of the 10th Virginia Cavalry by Robert J. Driver, Howard Publishing, Confederate Archives and LVA Archivist may be in err. If anyone can assist with this final disposition I can be reached by email using the edit feature.
