His father was Rev. Asahel Chase.
Asahel's first marriage was to Sophia Garland. A genealogy of the Garland family lists 3 children of this union, two of whom, died young (Sarah and William; buried with their mother, Sophia).
Leaving his surviving son, John Henry, with Sophia's mother, Asahel m. Grace Peacock and had two children. Both the Garland genealogy and the genealogy of Thomas and Aquila Chase list Asahel as having moved to California and says he died there in 1860. It's possible his intent was to move to California, but he only made it as far as Illinois. He can be found on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses living with his wife, Sarah, in Aurora and Wheatland. After Sarah's death in 1888, Asahel returns to New Hampshire.
By 1880, Grace had moved to the midwest with her daughter.
Having now found his death record, Asahel was in Rhode Island in the late 1890s before returning to NH for the last 7 years of his life. This is proven by record of his will being probated and by his appearance in the 1900 NH census.
