US Congressman. He was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania but at the age of two moved with his parents across the state line to Columbiana County, Ohio. Although he received little formal education, he moved to Tuscarawas County, Ohio where he became a successful farmer, and contractor and became interested in locals politics. He became a staunch Democrat and was a delegate to his party's national convention in 1860 before being elected to Congress where he represented Ohio's Thirty-Seventh District from 1861 to 1863. After serving one term he returned to Tuscarawas County where he became superintendent of the Ohio-Erie Canal in Newcomerstown, a position he held until his death in 1872. He is memorialized with a portrait that hangs on the east wall of the Tuscarawas County Courthouse rotunda.
