Enoch made a substitute soldier contract with George Ritenour to serve the C.S.A. in his place for $544. But near the close of the war, when the C.S.A. was desperate for replacements, the Confederacy
called up the reserves from the ages of 17 to 18 and 45 to 50 years old. Enoch went, reluctantly, fearing he’d be killed if he didn’t, and became ill with Bloody Dysentery while on guard duty near Richmond. When he was near death they gave him sick leave but he made it only as far as Staunton, Va., where he died.
