Kathy Powell, 52, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2015, at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Timothy Geitz will officiate. Private family graveside service will take place at Christ Lutheran Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2015, at Grace Lutheran Church.

Kathy Kay Powell was born on December 17, 1962, in Le Mars, the daughter of Kenny Powell and Arlene Urban. She was baptized on January 13, 1963, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 24, 1975. Kathy was raised in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1981. She continued her education at Iowa Lakes Community College and earned an AAS degree in horticulture in 1983.

Her first position after college was with the Le Mars Flower House. She then took a position with Northrup King in Minneapolis, Minnesota. When the company was sold, she was transferred to Chicago, Illinois, then later to Fargo, North Dakota. Continuing her career in horticulture, Kathy moved to Yankton, South Dakota, and worked for Gurney’s Seed and Nursery Company.

She married Troy True on May 23, 1998, in Yankton. Kathy returned to Le Mars and took a position with Le Mars Ford Mercury. After missing the floral industry, Kathy found a job in the floral department at Hy-Vee.

Kathy was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and enjoyed cooking and baking for the various activities there. Along with baking and cooking, Kathy’s other passion was floral design. She was a grateful friend of Bill W.

She will be lovingly remembered by her mother, Arlene Urban of Le Mars; father, Kenny Powell of Mesa, AZ; sister, Shelly Naja and her daughter Sheldon of Clearwater, FL; brother, Jeff Powell and his wife Roxanne and their children Spencer and Alexa of Sparta, WI; two loving kitties, Freddie and Annie, that shared and blessed her life for 9 years; and uncles, Marvin Urban of Le Mars and Jack Powell and his wife Lori of Phoenix, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Henry and Rosie Urban and Jerry and Lois Powell; and an aunt, Shirley Urban.
