Friends in the area have learned of the death of a former prominent Marinette resident, Robert D. Haase, 86. He died last September 30, 2009 in Mount Rainier, Maryland.

He was a World War II veteran, UW-Madison professor, politician, leader in Marinette Legion baseball, state insurance commissioner and Marinette School Board member.

A memorial service is tentatively planned during the summer at Pederson Park and Haase Baseball Field in Marinette, WI.

Born in Marinette on May 10, 1923, he graduated from Marinette High School. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps. He was a member of the American Legion and the 40 et 8. He graduated from UW-Madison Law School in 1951.

He had a love for American Legion Baseball, having started the Marinette Legion Team in 1951. He continued to coach the team for over 30 years and served as Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Commissioner for many years. Haase Field, located next to Pederson Baseball Park in Marinette was named after the deceased for all his contributions in the Marinette area to the sport of baseball.

His political background began in 1956 when he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly. He served as Floor Leader in 1961, Speaker of the House in 1963, in 1964 was Wisconsin Delegate to the Republican National Convention and was also State Minority Leader in 1965. He served on and chaired many legislative committees during his tenure. He resigned from the State Assembly in 1965 when he was given the appointment of State Insurance Commissioner, a position he held until 1992.

Among his outstanding educational activities were Adjunct professor at UW-Madison both in the Law School and School of Business and served several terms on the Marinette School Board. He was also a member of Mensa Honor Society.

He is survived by a brother, William Haase and a sister-in-law, Jean of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Loretta of Wisconsin.

His parents, the late Circuit Court Judge and Mrs. William Haase preceded him in death.
