WILLIAM VIRGIL BALLEW, JR., died Tuesday, January 16, 1996 after a long illness. Mr. Ballew was born July 9, 1918 in Abilene, Texas, the son of the late William V. Ballew and Alice Cunningham Ballew of Dallas, Texas. He graduated in 1940 from Rice Institute where he was Editor of the Rice Thresher. During world War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard fast carriers in the Pacific, received a Bronze Star and Presidential Unit Citation, and ended his tour of duty as a lieutenant commander. After graduating from Yale Law School, he became associated with the law firm Baker & Botts where he practiced in Houston for forty years. Mr. Ballew was a charter member of Emerson Unitarian Church, and was active in numerous civic and political affairs, including the civil rights movement, the anti-poverty program, and the Harris County Democratic Party. He was a founder and president of the Texas Bill of Rights Foundation and the Friends of Fondren Library, and was past=president of Hester House, the Rice Alumni Association, Houston Philosophical Society, and the Houston Council on Foreign Relations. He earned the family nickname "Duke" by spending weekends with his family on the beloved farm in Burleson County, Texas He is survived by his wife, Iris Lytle Ballew; daughters and son-in-law Alice and Fraser A. McAlpine of Houston, Helen Ballew and William G. Bunch of Sn Antonio, Emily Jane and Richard W. Neff III of Houston; son and daughter-in-law William V. Ballew III and Coco Ballew of El Paso, three grandchildren, Kieman and Kathleen McAlpine, and William V. Ballew IV; sister Jane Branch, and nephew and niece John and Carol Branch of Dallas; sister-in-law Mary Beach of Bacova, Virginia; cousin Natalie Tandy Armstrong and husband Warren Armstrong of La Grange, and numerous other cousins and relatives A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 19, 1996 at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church, 6221 Main St., with The Rev. James T. Tucker officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Rice University, Friends of Fondren Library, MS 44-F, 6100 Main St., Houston, Texas 77005-1892, or the Charity of choice.
