Donald Francis Barta, son of George and Henrietta (Wylot) Barta was born on April 2, 1936. He grew up in Nash, ND, and graduated from Grafton High School, where he met his wife of sixty-one years, Linda Belter. While pursuing a music degree at Mayville State College in Mayville, ND, he played trumpet and piano with the George Barta Band, which was comprised of his father, relatives and friends.

Don started his teaching career in Beulah, ND, as a high school band and choir director. During this time he joined the U.S. Army National Guard and entered a new phase of his life with a thirty-one year career in the military as a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He reached the rank of Lt. Colonel before retiring and beginning another career as Assistant Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh.

In his retirement, he was "instrumental" in organizing the MountainBrook Village Band. As Director, he formed many friendships with numerous talented musicians. He also played tuba and accordion in Harvey Beck's Hungry 5+ and the Silveridge Pops Orchestra.

Don is survived by his wife Linda; sons, Craig (Candy), Albuquerque, NM; Brad (Kari), Venice, FL; Bruce, Sterling Heights, MI; daughters, Paige (Larry) Waalkens, Forest Lake, MN; and Pamela (Kurt) Vandermeer, Halstad, MN; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Conan, Apache Junction, AZ.

A service will be held at St. George's Catholic Church, 300 E 16th Ave, Apache Junction, Arizona on Monday, April 6th at 10:30 a.m.

Interment will be at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona at a later date. Memorials can be sent to The Crossing: Hospice Care, Inc. of Phoenix.
