Winifred was killed as a result of a car crash at the Devil's Elbow, Black Spur, Healesville. She was in a car on that road when the brakes failed. The driver drove his vehicle into the side of the hill deliberately rather than continue picking up speed down the hill. Winifred stood up from her front seat for a better view. The jolt caused by the car suddenly stopping threw her out of the vehicle. Her fiance sitting next to her tried to hold onto her, but he fell out too. They were both run over by the car they had been travelling in. Charles survived but Winifred died at the scene.
