bio:
Dean Coats Petersen was born 9 February 1926 in Granger, Utah to Alfred and Elizabeth "Bessie" Petersen. He was the youngest of their three sons, and was born only 5 months before the untimely death of his father.

After his father died, he, his mother and older brother Robert moved in with his widowed grandmother, Mary Edith Hunter Coats. Dean developed heart disease which ultimately claimed his life. He was only 13 years old when he died in 1939. Dean was buried in the Taylorsville Memorial Park Cemetery near his father and his brother Nelsen, who died as an infant in 1924.

Dean's mother Bessie died in 1988 and was buried near Alfred and Dean. In an old scrapbook of Bessie's was found Dean's report cards from Monroe School, Valentines Dean had made, Dean's school assignments, handwritten letters from Dean's school friends, photos of Dean and his funeral program-- possessions his mother kept for over 50 years.
